• Michael Collins was a leader of the Irish Republicans in the early 20th century. He was instrumental in moving Ireland toward independence from Great Britain during the first half of the 20th century. The film 'Michael Collins' is a reasonably accurate depiction of this history.

• The General Post Office, where in 1916 Patrick Pearse read the Proclamation of Irish Independence, starting the Easter Uprising, and what was to be the start of another bloody phase in Ireland's fight for independence from Britain. This phase, with some fits and starts, was ultimately successful.

• The stainless steel Millenium Spire is located on the spot where a statue of British hero Horatio Nelson once stood. That statue was blown up in 1966 by the IRA. Dubliners are creative in their nicknames for sculptures and buildings. The Spire is variously referred to as the Stiletto in the Ghetto, the Stiffy on the Liffey, the Pole in the Hole, or the Spike in the Dike.

• The Guinness Storehouse building was originally the St. James's Gate Brewery. It was built in 1902 in the style of the Chicago School of Architecture and was the first multi-storey steel-framed building to be constructed in Ireland. It was extensively remodeled to become the Guinness Storehouse tourist attraction, which opened in 2000.

• Eamon De Valera was the only leader of the Easter Rebellion not to be executed. He was born in the USA to Irish parents and, thus, was a US citizen and had a US passport. The British thought executing him would create an international incident. He went on to become a president of the Republic of Ireland.

• This courtyard is where fourteen Easter Uprising leaders were executed. All but one was shot to death by firing squad near the location of the cross.
