The stainless steel Millenium Spire is located on the spot where a statue of British hero Horatio Nelson once stood. That statue was blown up in 1966 by the IRA. Dubliners are creative in their nicknames for sculptures and buildings. The Spire is variously referred to as the Stiletto in the Ghetto, the Stiffy on the Liffey, the Pole in the Hole, or the Spike in the Dike.
