John Day Country

The city of John Day, Oregon (population about 1,700) is the largest city in Grant County, Oregon (population about 7,200). The Chinatown that grew with the Canyon Creek Gold Rush of 1862 was located in John Day, two miles north of Canyon City (population about 700), the Grant County seat. The Kam Wah Chung State Park, located in John Day, provides insights into the lives of Chinese immigrants in the United States and to life in the Gold Rush era of the American West. John Day Country is also home to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, a dream for paleontologists and geologists.
