• The Santa Fe River is dry at this time of year. It 'flows' just south of the Loretto Inn.

• The city of Santa Fe was founded in 1610. More than 200 years later the Santa Fe Trail became a major trading route between Santa Fe and Kansas City.

• The Chapel of La Conquistadora is part of the adobe church built in 1714. It was preserved and incorporated into the present church that was completed in 1887.

• La Conquistadora (Our Lady of Peace). The statue was brought from Spain in 1625, and is the oldest representation of the Virgin Mary in the United States.

• Ansel Adams, Taos Pueblo Church, New Mexico - 1942. The church has been significantly remodeled since Ansel Adams' 1942 photographs.

• The original San Geronimo Church was constructed in the early 1600's by the Catholic priests using the labor of native people. The church was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 and rebuilt in 1706. The second church was destroyed by U.S. troops in 1847 in retaliation for the death of New Mexico territorial Governor Charles Bent. Its ruins remain on the site of the Taos Pueblo cemetery. The Collinses have a lot of 'Bents' in the family tree, so we are probably related to Charles Bent.

• This style of oven, used for baking bread, was common at the pueblo.

• Adobe bricks are dried in the sun, but are not fired.

• Doors are a European influence on pueblo structures. There are no interior connections between floors. Access to upper stories is always by exterior ladders.
