The original San Geronimo Church was constructed in the early 1600's by the Catholic priests using the labor of native people. The church was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 and rebuilt in 1706. The second church was destroyed by U.S. troops in 1847 in retaliation for the death of New Mexico territorial Governor Charles Bent. Its ruins remain on the site of the Taos Pueblo cemetery. The Collinses have a lot of 'Bents' in the family tree, so we are probably related to Charles Bent.
