Carob tree - Because carob seeds are a constant weight of 200 mg, they once served as a unit of weight, between gold traders in particular, in Africa and then India. This is the origin of the carat, a unit of weight used to measure precious stones. The carob tree was chosen as Monaco's national tree by H.S.H. Prince Rainier III in 1995.
