Syracuse, a 2,700-year-old city, played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Syracuse is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, next to the Gulf of Syracuse beside the Ionian Sea. The city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. We toured the Archaeological Park, which includes an ancient Greek theater and an ancient Roman amphitheater, Ortigia, an island fortress that is the historical heart of Syracuse, and the Archaeological Museum.
As we approached Syracuse, Sicily, we were treated to wonderful panoramic views of the city.

I took this photo thinking the symbols looked liked the Native American carving in the Columbia River Gorge called 'She Who Watches' just before our local guide told us the symbols represent fornication. Oops!

The Sanctuary was designed in 1957 by French architects Michel Andrault and Pierre Parat following an international competition. Construction began in 1966 and completed in 1994. Both controversy in the community and the discovery of ancient artifacts delayed construction.
