• Upon our arrival in Napier, Wyn Smith gave us a tour of the architectural features of the town. Her son greeted her and the tour group on our walking tour.

• Napier was decimated by an earthquake in 1931. In spite of the international depression, townspeople pulled together to rebuild. They rebuilt in the architectural styles popular at the time, primarily Art Deco, Mission, and Prairie.

• This neoclassical style building, constructed of reinforced concrete, survived the earthquake. Note the new street light. All of the cantilevered lights will eventually be replaced. Note the corner of the building at the street intersection.
