Beyond Wrightway: Louis Sullivan in Chicago

June 2010

Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) is considered by many to be the creator of the modern skyscraper. With partner Dankmar Adler, Sullivan designed many architecturally important buildings in the Chicago area at the turn of the 20th Century. Sullivan was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright and also the inspiration to a group of Chicago architects who have become known as the Prairie School. Sullivan's work is characterized by lush ornamentation.
