• The fountain at DuPont Circle, by Daniel Chester French, was commissioned by the duPont family to honor Samuel Francis duPont, the first naval hero for the Union during the Civil War

• The James G. Blaine Mansion (1881) is one of many grand homes built on Massachusetts Avenue during the Gilded Age. Blaine was a senator from Maine. George Westinghouse purchased the house in 1901.

• A statue of Ghandi in front of the Indian Embassy, the former Thomas Murray house (1901), an example of Beaux Arts architecture.

• The Anderson House (1902) is the current home of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization founded after the Revolutionary War by officers of the Continental army and navy and their French counterparts. Current members are eligible male descendants of these officers. George Washington was the Society's first president general and served in that position until his death.

• The Townsend House (1901) is now home to the Cosmos Club, founded in 1878 by John Wesley Powell and dedicated to the advancement of its members in science, literature, and art. An invitation-only club that only recently allowed female members and even more recently allowed them to enter through the front door.
