A Medical Missionary in China

1893-1900

These photos were assembled into a photo album by Doug's grandfather, the Rev. Dr. Henry Clinton Collins. The photo album was given to Doug by Charles K. Dodge, Jr (Charlie). Charlie's grandfather, Frank Alton Collins, and Doug's grandfather, Henry Clinton Collins, were brothers, both sons of William Collins III and Leah Sophia Griffin. Charlie's mom and Doug's dad were first cousins. Charlie and Doug were second cousins, although Charlie was 23 years older than Doug. Charlie referred to Doug's grandfather as 'Uncle Clint'. Charlie passed away in 2008 at the age of 82.

It is likely that the photos in this album give a good picture of what Grandfather Collins saw in China and the people with whom he worked, lived, and associated. The first photo in this album (not part of Grandfather's album) was taken of HC Collins in 1883, when he was 21 years of age. This was ten years before he left for China to serve as a Medical Missionary. The captions for photos titled No. 1 through No. 35 were written by Grandfather Collins.
